‘Seek out the truth!’ Cheung said

“The responsibility of media is to seek out the truth and protect the justice.” The vice chairman of Shun Hing Education and Charity Fund, Cheung Man Yee said. Cheung criticized that the media nowadays ignore the truth and they work for high circulation only. She told the students that the truth is justice. Hence responsible media should explore and report the truth, in order to protect the justice.

Media environment is changed

Cheung mentioned that the emergence of Apple Daily was the turning point of media culture. Under the effect of Apple Daily, other newspapers pretend to be ‘open’ and claim to ‘monitor’ the action of government. The main purpose of the newspapers is to win the popular support and hence gain the circulation.

Newspaper content is transformed

According to Cheung, the content of news nowadays is over-simplified. Large headlines and large photos are commonly used to attract the readers. Pornographic and violent elements are inserted into the news for claptrap. The newspapers consist of mainly entertainment information rather than news.

Criticism on Broadcasting Authority

The issue of the homosexual feature story broadcasting on RTHK made noise from the public. ‘To cover the story does not mean to promote!” She stressed that the programme is reflecting the pressure faced by the homosexual. She criticized that the discouraging action taken by the Broadcasting Authority is unreasonable.

Cheung also criticized the request of Broadcasting Authority to cut some dialogues of the movie “An Autumn Tale”. According to Cheung, the dialogues are not foul language under the current standard and the purpose of those dialogues is to shape the special character.
