Hong Kong film director Wong Jing urged public to discard the term ‘Hong Kong movies” and embrace “Chinese-language films” instead. He said that Hong Kong media workers should open their mind towards mainland competitors.

Wong celebrated last night the success of his latest joint mainland-Hong Kong production, From Vegas to Macau, after the box takings of the film hit $2.6 hundred million in China and $30 million in Hong Kong and Macau.

Speaking in Shue Yan University this afternoon, Wong suggested Hong Kong people take a new look at their 1.3 billion mainland counterparts, given to the rapid development of China in recent years.

Citing his experience of being a judge in an Anhui variety programme, Wong commented that Hong Kong fell behind mainland in terms of hardware in television production.

“The studio in Anhui Television is two times larger than that in TVB, not to mention it ranks third in size in the province,” Wong said.

He pointed out that Hong Kong people should erase their sense of superiority in a bid to catch up with their neighboring competitors.

“Drawing a line between local movies and mainland ones would merely make things complicated,” Wong expressed.

He also highlighted the importance to appreciate the “kind, civilized and rational” portion of China’s population amid growing trend to depict mainlanders as ‘locusts’.
