“Always hunt for the truth”, said Cheung.
Ms. Cheung Man Yee, Vice Chairman of Shun Hing Education and Charity Fund, is invited to give a talk about the Hong Kong Media scene before and after 1997 in Shue Yan University.
Because of the bursting out of information, Cheung said nowadays there are too many newspapers in Hong Kong, most of them couldn’t provide a clear, reasonable analysis for the audiences. That is not good news to us whereas the quality of news is getting worse.
While the moral of the journalist is being ignored, and the media only work with money and concern about how to make more profit. She insisted that all the journalists should do the work with truth, as belief is the same as truth. The justice could only be preserved if we work with truth.
“There is no such thing as government’s money, it’s public’s money.” Cheung emphasized. In a democracy society, the government should take peoples’ interest as their first priority and the media should have freedom from the government’s control and have their own decision-making power. “Editor and the news should have liberty” She claimed. That is very important for all of journalists.
“Reporting not equal to promoting.” Cheung believes that is the journalists’ responsibility, and they need to represent the issues or emotions justly and objectively. Finally, she encouraged the students to build up a critical mind when receiving the information from the media. Also, paying more attention to the China’s development might help us to recognize our identity.
