The director assistant of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong S.A.R., Wang Ru-deng, attended a talk in Shue Yan University yesterday and introduced the functions of the Office.

The predecessor of the Liaison Office is the Xinhua News Agency Hong Kong Branch, which was established in 1947. After the handover, it was renamed as the Liaison Office. “We are the bridge between Mainland China and HKSAR. There are five functions: communicating with the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and garrison in HKSAR; communicating and assisting in the management of Mainland Company in Hong Kong; enhancing the relationship between the Mainland and the HKSAR in the field of education, science, culture, etc; reporting opinions from Hong Kong people to the Central government, and dealing with the issues related Taiwan and HKSAR.” said Wang.

Wang also gave three suggestions to the teenagers nowadays, saying that it is important for them to be conscious of being leaders; to have the ability to coordinate and harmonize, and to be more aggressive.

When talking about universal suffrage, Wang emphasized that he has confidence in implementing it in Hong Kong. “According to the Basic Law, there will be universal suffrage in Hong Kong at the end. However, the most important is to be practical and to move in proper sequence.” Wang said.
