As the discussion about privacy and law in the society is recently boosted up again by the event of Gillian Chung, an assembly was hold in HKSYC for Journalism students to know more about the aspect and catch up with the issue. Serenade Woo, Lai-wan, the chairlady of Hong Kong Journalists Association, claimed that the law protecting privacy somehow affect the job of journalists.
Woo pointed out that journalists usually use several methods to report and cover issues which probably against the concept of “protecting the privacy”. “Journalists are always accompanied with candid cameras in some cases that must investigate secretly. No suspect would wait and show you up what he/she do when you want to report the case.”
“Journalists must not break the law. It is too hard to identify what is against the law however.” said Woo.
The definition of privacy is too uncertain for the journalists, even for the legislators to make law. Famous lawyer, Gilbert Mo, Sik-keung said that the common law is protecting the privacy of citizen in the past, but the government suggested a new one. However, Mo deemed that it is difficult to set up criteria for “privacy”.
