“The proverbial culture should be respected” said by a columnist
The owner of the publisher “subculture”, Pang Chi Ming, attended a talk in Shue Yan University yesterday shared his view over the culture and development of proverb and slang in Hong Kong.
“One pupil used a proverb I introduced in my column, but unfortunately, his teacher gave him a big cross, and commented that his work was nonsense. It made me felt distressed.” told by Pang at the beginning of the talk.
Pang then shared his view over the culture, saying that it may be good to use proverbs and slang. “Using proverbs may sometimes make your writing more lively and true to life.” He said. “It is important to have consonance with the readers. If we only insist on using traditional Chinese, some readers may not understand the content, and they will just give up!”
One more reason for Pang to support proverbs is that it is also important for a reporter to deliver the message accurately and simply. “If we use proverbs and slang, readers know our meaning easily, and it strengthens the interaction between readers and us.”
However, he warned students not to overuse proverbs and slang, saying that it would turn the writing into vulgar. “We should know the unique function of each proverb and slang and not to abuse them.” He added.
