Every country should have its own supervision on freedom, says Lau Nai-keung

Lau Nai-keung, the National People’s Congress Standing Committee National Member believed authority and freedom should have moderate balance despite freedom with restriction in mainland China.

“The transmission of information on internet is important,” Lau says in the general assembly at Hong Kong Shue Yan University. “If there is no restriction, it will lead to the depravation of the society.”

Some criticizes that blockade and filtering of sensitive topics on internet in mainland intervene in freedom of speech, he says western countries also supervise their internet information but with a different technique.

“Constraint on freedom of speech is necessary,” Lau says. “The trend is that internet is gradually under supervision.”

“Freedom of speech, migration and resident registration are poor, but people can still enjoy academic freedom,” Lau says.

Lau suggests mainland China can follow the four ways of position, harmony, people-oriented, ethics and self-actualization for future development.

“Mainland China should have its own way for future development which should not be compared with western countries, otherwise, it will make mainland lag behind.”
