HKSYU, 11 Dec - Raymond. R. Wong, the chairperson of Communications Authority Broadcast Codes of Practice Committee, at a talk at Hong Kong Shue Yan University yesterday emphasized that journalists should report news rather than make it. [LEAD COMBINED]

People can have all kinds of opinions, but opinion should be supported by fact. Unfortunately, some of newspapers in Hong Kong just create the news, he said. Wong said, ”Our job is not to make news, but to report it.” He questioned that if newspaper can not inform us on the fair and balance bases, then who would provide the information. [NEEDS SOME CLARITY]

Speak of internet, Wong pointed out that it was the best of time and worst of time in Hong Kong media stage. “ I always thought, as a journalist, I must be neutral. But how you can be neutral in internet,” he said. He found that many people in Hong Kong use Facebook to take a political stand. And he doesn’t think it’s professional and fair for a well-known reporter from TV station to take a side on a story on the internet.

Since City Telecom had some trouble in getting the TV licence, some people think it is a cutthroat competition among the TV station. However, Wong indicated that it’s quite reasonable in capitalist society like Hong Kong. “There’s nothing wrong with people to make money. Just don’t be so naive,” he said.
