今天是二零零七年新同學入學的第一天，也是本校自去年十二月十九日蒙香港政府會同行政局正式宣佈本校獲得大學的名義及資歷以來，首批來校修讀四年制大學的同學，其中包括約八十位來自祖國大陸的新同學，本人謹代表全體師生向所有來校的新同學表示熱烈歡迎。本人亦想趁這個機會，與各位談談大學教育的理念。本校校長鍾期榮博士在樹仁第三期學術年刊序言中，曾談到大學教育，她說大學教育的使命和目的，不只是灌輸知識與技能，更重要的是啟發思想、發展潛能、培養學生健全完善的人格。德、智、體、群、美五育並重，既要追求高深學問，亦須培養高尚的情操。

Today marks the first day of admission for new students to our campus in the academic year of 2007. These are the first batch of students to join us on a four-year university system, since 19 December 2006 when approval was given by the Chief Executive in Council for Hong Kong Shue Yan College to change its title to “Hong Kong Shue Yan University”. Around 80 of them are from the mainland. On behalf of all teaching staff and students, I wish to extend a warm welcome to them all. Please also allow me the opportunity to discuss the underlying mission of a university education. Dr Chung Chi Yung, Vice President of our University, also touched on this subject in her foreword for the third issue of Shue Yan Academic Journal. She described the mission and objectives of a university education are not only confined to disseminating knowledge and skills, but they also extend to mental inspiration, potential development and character cultivation of students. Equal emphasis must be laid on promoting moral character, knowledge, physical well-being, team spirit and aesthetic appreciation. While lofty education is being pursued, the cultivation of moral character is just as vital.

校長又說：我校自一九七一年創校，即以仁者教育為目標，堅持四年制大學課程，不受利誘，擇善固執，以樹美德、立仁風，培養一眾謙謙君子，貢獻社會為己任。

Our Vice President added: Since the founding of our campus in 1971, its objective has always been to provide an education on benevolence, with the concept of a four-year university programme upheld and a steadfast commitment to the right values in the face of temptations and set a moral example promoting the virtue of benevolence, with the view of transforming students into literati imbued with an attitude of humility and dedicated to serving the larger society.

樹仁卅餘年來，堅持「敦仁博物」為校訓，對同學們處世做學問，均有正確的準則，形成樹仁獨有的校風。「敦仁」是中國哲理中最高的境界，為要尊重自己則更要尊重他人；為要培養自己更要扶植他人；也就是說「己欲達而達人，己欲立而立人」的意義，這是積極的做人態度。「博物」是做學問的態度，就是開導各位同學，做學問，不能馬虎，要窮其究竟，不但要知其然，並且進一步知其所以然。(To know not only how but also why)，既要博大又要精深。

For more than 30 years, Shue Yan’s motto is defined by the phrase “Promotion of Virtues, Mastery of Knowledge”, wherein a clear set of guidelines are established to steer students along, from relating to others to pursuing academic knowledge, and this has shaped Shue Yan’s unique campus culture. Exemplifying a refined state of Chinese philosophy, “Promotion of Virtues” highlights the importance of respecting ourselves and more importantly of others too. Equally, while we cultivate ourselves, it is even more vital to help others establish themselves, which expresses a positive attitude to adopt in life. “Mastery of Knowledge” relates to the attitude towards academic pursuits, by which students should develop a curiosity to know not only how but also why, on the quest for knowledge of a profound scope and depth.

換言之，樹仁大學辦學理念是道德與學問並重，但大學教育的目的，不僅限於研究學問求取高深的知識及創造發明，更在於學做人，怎樣成為一個對社會有貢獻的人士，愛國愛港，發揚中華文化及傳統。四年的大學生活，是人生中很寶貴的一部份，我認為在這四年中，各位要好好打下中英文的基礎，因為錯過了這四年，各位再也沒有機會磨練自己的語文能力，而且目前世界上各種學科均變化得很快，您目前學了，或許過了幾年就變了或陷於無用，只有語文是永恆不變的，各位學好了語文將會受用無窮。

In other words, Shue Yan University’s educational mission is giving equal emphasis to ethics and education. The thrust of a university education is not limited to carrying out academic research on in-depth knowledge or inventions and discoveries, but to help students become better persons in their own right and capable of making contributions to society, while loving the country and Hong Kong and promoting Chinese culture and its traditions. Four years of university education are the most precious period in one’s life. In my opinion, each of you should build a strong foundation in Chinese and English. If these four years are not well spent, you will never encounter another chance of honing your language skills. Furthermore, every academic discipline of the world is undergoing rapid change. You may have mastered a discipline now, but years from now, it could well be obsolete. Only languages remain intact and a mastery of them will serve you well throughout your lifetime.

本人也想趁這個機會，要向各位一提的，就是樹仁教育的理念，是要使各位的路愈走愈寬，各位在求學的四年中，因時代及社會環境的變遷，要作出多樣不同的選擇或決定，樹仁的教育，就要幫助各位便於作出此種不同的裁決，無論就業或深造，都可得心應手，滿足各位的需求，而獲得滿意的發展。天行健君子自強不息，這是中國知識分子，勉勵及警惕自己的格言，希望各位自己勉勵，敦促自己，不斷增強自己，克服困難，戰勝環境。

Taking this opportunity, I wish to highlight Shue Yan’s educational mission as one leading you onto an increasingly wide path in life. In these few years of education, you will have to make different options and decisions, owing to the changing times and society. Ultimately, whether you move on to a career or a further education, what you have learned here will help smoothen your path and ensure satisfactory development for your career. As a saying of the Chinese literati goes, self-striving is the forte of gentlemen. I hope every one of you will continue to spur yourself on, as your self-striving will put you in good stead for overcoming adversities and difficult situations.

大學辦學亦應自強不息，我校在近四十年艱苦奮鬥中，發展良多，於年前已向政府申請撥給毗鄰文康大樓空地以便興建未來研究院大樓，亦可望於不久辦妥手續動工興建。此外本校今年增添二個學位課程，即為法律與商業﹝榮譽﹞學士學位及心理學﹝榮譽﹞學士學位課程，使本校除與國外大學合作舉辦之學士及碩士課程外，共有十二個本港承認之榮譽學士學位課程，希望大學當局與各位同學共同勉勵，造福社會，造成校長多年之願望。本人謹在此代表樹仁大學祝願各位新同學，在未來四年中，有一個快樂充實及滿懷希望的大學生活，並祝願奮鬥終生勞苦功高的鍾期榮校長早日康復，各位教授及同仁享有教學相長之樂趣及身體健康家庭幸福。謝謝各位。

Likewise, a university needs to strive and surpass itself in its educational role. In our strivings of close to 40 years, considerable progress has been made. More than a year ago, we applied to the government for the grant of vacant land adjacent to the Recreation Complex for the site of our upcoming Research Complex. Clearance for the construction work is expected soon. Furthermore, our university will offer two additional degree courses- Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree in Law and Business as well as Bachelor of Social Science (Honours) in Psychology. Apart from bachelors and masters courses jointly organised with overseas universities, we also offer a total of 12 honours programmes accredited in Hong Kong. It is my hope that the university and its students will encourage each other, in a united bid towards contributing to the larger society as envisioned by our Vice President for many years. On behalf of Shue Yan University, I dedicate my best wishes to all incoming new students and that, in the coming four years, they will achieve a happy and promising life experience on campus. Also, I wish a speedy recovery for Dr Chung who has dedicated herself to a lifetime of hard work and contributions. May I also wish all our lecturers and teaching staff good health, family happiness and great satisfaction from a teaching career at the Shue Yan University. Thank you.
