Some members from now TV today gathered at Shue Yan University and analyzed why Hong Kong artists are now targeting mainland market.

Joe Ng

Wong He, the former artist of TVB, said that the artists [what artists?] would like to enter the mainland market because of its huge exposure. For example [providing examples is a good way to expand on general points and ideas], each Lunar New Year, China Central Television organizes a national variety program, “Spring Festival Gala Evening”. The actors over the country would like to join and perform in the program. They are not paid and even have to pay for their personal spending. These artists still compete for and treasure the chance. “This is all about calculation,” Wong said, “you don’t know that how many bosses are among the 7000 millions audiences and how many of them will offer you opportunities.”[Great example, that showcases exposure]

Wong also said that mainland TV stations gave Hong Kong artists much more attractive offers. By claiming himself as just a fair popular artist, he used himself as an example and said that mainland TV stations normally offered the artists like him 50 thousands dollars for a show. And beside 50 thousands dollars, the TV stations would afford some of his and his assistances’ spending such as traffic and accommodation. So, the TV stations actually paid almost 100 thousands dollars, he said. However, it is commonly known that the local TV stations sometimes underpay the guests or even don’t pay them. [Another fantastic paragraph. Well focused, and with examples.]

Ng Yu, the Chairman of the IFPI (Hong Kong Group) Ltd., explained that some of the mainland TV stations were able to pay the artists well since they had sufficient advertising revenue. Take the countdown event in “Spring Festival Gala Evening” as an example, just a ten-second advertisement can cost an advertiser 100 millions dollars. And the advertising revenue for just that night was 5000 millions dollars few years ago, much more than the annual advertising revenue of the local stations.

[This is a fantastic article that thoroughly explains why the Hong Kong artists are attracted to the Mainland.]
