(Chan actually didn't refer to Apple as the sole technology company that changed the media business. He just referred it generally as "the new technology". Mind you, 3G wasn't invented by Apple. Remember, in news writing, we only use the surname as the brief form of address. In this case, it is Chan, not Tim. So it was incorrect for you to say "Tim shared his....", or, "Tim also talked about....". )

Tim Chan: Newspaper changed by Apple

25th September, 2012

by Raymond Hui (Hui Kun Lam)

These years, people say Newspaper is declining, but when is the turning point? “It’s right after the invention of 3G technology and Apple’s iPhone”, said Tim Chan, executive editor of Hong Kong Economic Journal.

Chan shared his observation in the general assembly of Shue Yan University. In old days, people have their own copy of newspaper in subway compartments, but for now, “I see no one holding a copy of Economic Journal”, “People keep tapping their own smartphones”. But he is positive to the industry; HKEJ’s paid online version attracted more than 8000 subscribers at the beginning, Chan quoted there is only 2% net decrease with a raise of 50% in subscription fee in second year.

Chan also talked about opportunities of online media; he said there are professionals forming a specialized media website for social issues, “The charge a high rate, but still lot subscribers”. Chan said although Newspaper industry showed its sunset, journalism itself is still vibrant. Journalism students can still have a good prospect at the industry.

Chan mentioned the requirement of an economic journalist too, “You don’t’ need to know what CDO is”, “You won’t remember those sin, cos stuffs in secondary school!” Chan said professional terms can be learnt through work, and there are lots of hidden facts for good journalists to find out of.
