A scholar said on Tuesday that 89% of academic essays from Hong Kong are rejected by journals, and most of them are rejected for poor English.

Dr. Steve Wallace, a professor of Medicine, Electrical Engineering and Business Management, in National Taiwan University, said it was painful for journal editors to read a paper with grammatical mistakes even if the research is interesting.

“Little English errors cut our research, cut our creditability, and might cause our editors or reviewers to reject our work,” said Wallace.

Apart from English errors, Wallace commented that most of the researchers in the territory would have a better writing style if they simplify their sentences.

“We are not writing to impress, but express our results” added Wallace, “sometimes our beautiful word get in the way of our meaning, and we must never let that happen.”

Wallace also pinpointed the misuse of passive voice as the major error made by local scholars.
