To Chung, the Chairman of Chi Heng Foundation shared his views on “Orphans created by the AIDS Epidemic in Central China” with the students of Shue Yan College on Tuesday.
“Fire is still burning, we are firefighters,” To Chung said. To Chung quit his banking career and came to help the AIDS-impacted orphans in mainland for 5 years.
To is worrying about the impact of AIDS in China. Many poor patients in Central China sold blood for extra income. Due to unsanitary collection practices, such as re-injection of red blood cells to donors after blood extraction, many of them got HIV. There are about 40% of the adult population is inflected with the HIV in numerous villages, To Chung mentioned.
Many children become orphans after their parents died because of AIDS. AIDS-impacted orphans are suffering from discrimination and lack of care. “We must pass the message that there are love and care in the world to the orphans,” To Chung said. He opposed the idea that to put the AIDS-impacted orphans in special schools. “The best way to help the children is to let the children grow up locally and go to school with the other non-HIV impacted children,” To Chung suggested.
1 December of each year is the World AIDS Day. It is time for all the people worldwide to united and fight the diseases. To Chung encourages Hong Kong people to help AIDS-impacted orphans through voluntary work and donation.
