Although many citizens are afraid that ATV will be closed soon if the terrestrial TV market is opened up in Hong Kong, Mr Mark Lee Po On, executive director and group general manager of TVB, said ATV will not be the first one to close.

Mr Lee and Mr Desmond Chan, Assistant General Manager of TVB, shared their views on the future of terrestrial TV in Hong Kong at Hong Kong Shue Yan University yesterday.

Mr Lee said that facing the fierce competition in terrestrial TV market, it is difficult for free TV companies which are less competitive to survive. When asked, which company will close when three companies providing terrestrial TV service existing in the market, Mr Lee said that ATV will not be the first one to close.

According to the analysis provided by Mr Lee, although ATV is facing loss every year, it knows how to work under this circumstance, for example producing programmes with low budget so as to minimize the loss.

On the other hand, he thought Hong Kong TV would be the one under threat. According to the statistic estimated by Mr Lee, the expense of it, around four to five billion, would be greater than the income in large amount, which might make it close. Mr Lee claimed that income of TV is mainly comes from the advertisements. And to generate income from advertisements was not a easy process as it needed time to build up the reputation and the rate of the company.
