Tim Chan, the Executive Chief Editor of Hong Kong Economic Journal, said today in Shue Yan University that it was not necessary to have prior knowledge in economics and accounting to be an economic and financial news reporter. He also added that reporters in this field had a bright future.

“Prior knowledge in economics and accounting is not a ‘must’ for those who want to be an economic and financial reporter,” Chan said,”although it may be an extra credit.”He explained that the world was changing instantly that even the experienced economic and financial reporters were still learning endlessly.

However, the learning process is not too difficult. “It is easier for economic and financial reporters to accumulate their ‘assets’ than journalists in other beat, ”Chan said. The reason was economic and financial reporters always covered news about a few companies and leading lights in the market. They would have acquaintance and develop a social network with these repeated interviewees or news sources.

Chan added that experienced economic and financial reporters are often recruited by other companies or businesses after working in journalism for several years.
