A professional photojournalist should understand the news before they take photos

Nowadays, everyone is reporter. Once the citizens use camera or phone to take photo and put it in the Internet, they can be the “reporter”. Ringo Chiu, Chief Photojournalist at Los Angeles Business Journal, said, the biggest difference between photojournalists and those citizen was the photojournalists have accurate judgment. "Before we take the photos, we need to understand every single news, because as a professional photojournalist we need to transmit the truth correctly.”, said Chiu.

(Nowadays, everyone is a reporter. Any smartphone user can take a picture and post it on the internet, playing the role of 'reporter,' said Ringo C, a veteran photojournalist who has worked in US and HK media.

Speaking at xxxx, Chiu said the major difference between photoj and 'citizen journalists' was that professional journalists have more accurate news judgment.

'before we take a picutre, we need to understand what the news is so that we can tell the truth (through pictures) accurately.")

Chiu said, comparing with the Hong Kong photojournalists, American photojournalists have a wider perspective and more angles of looking of things. Also, the western news organizations values on photographs, they are willing to pay to modify the photographs in order to have a better results and quality.

(Compared with HK photojournalism, he said American photoj have a wider perspective and range of news angles. Western media organisations, he said, also attached more importance to photos, adding they were willing to spend more resources to enhance quality of picutres and graphis).

“The freedom of speech and press of Hong Kong are declining.”, said Chiu. He said, the interferences of the Hong Kong government and mainland government makes the problem of press freedom becomes more serious. Chiu said, the politics and press freedom of Hong Kong become more and more mainlandization while Shanghai becomes westernization.

The US-based Freedom Hosue published its annual press freedom index in xxxx, in which HK ranks XXX. Chiu said freedom of the press and speech in HK were declining.

He criticised HK and central governments for interferences with the media in HK. Politics and media in HK have become 'mainlandised' as Shanghai has become more 'Westernised.'
