Free newspapers are now dominating the news industry. Some critics say that free newspapers are more like ads papers nowadays. "People can put up with excessive ads in free newspapers, as readers know we need it so as to survive." said editor-in-chief of AM730, Alan Lo during a talk in Shue Yan University.

In terms of advertisement, AM730 mainly holds lots of financial ads, like bank, investment, etc. “Although we need advertisement to make ends meet, it should not be unlimited. The ideal proportion of news to ads should be 50:50.” said Alan Lo.

"Given the situation that we already had a relatively high proportion of advertisement, we no longer can sacrifice more news places for ads. Even there are new ads' customers, we cannot take it anymore. ” Alan Lo explained.

Because of lower ads' fees, Hong Kong has a higher proportion of advertisement than other places, like the mainland or some foreign countries. In order to save places for news, Lo suggested that free press can either raise ads' fee or print the maximum of 64 pages for every issue. Then balance between news and ads can be achieved, according to Lo.

Saturday edition, like Headlines, may gain extra ads' profit; Lo insisted that AM730 prefer to be a weekday newspaper. “Our target groups are always the working population, especially the younger workers; therefore, Saturday edition will not be our option lately.” said Lo.
