Advertiser says renewal for medicinal advertising is needed

HONG KONG, March 19 - The regulation of medical advertising needs to be reviewed and revised, said an advertiser during a talk at Shue Yan University.

“Is facebook’s ad or status a print ad? We don’t know,” said Dixon Wu, the director of Flagship Co. Ltd, a media planning and production company.

Wu’s company focused on the promotion of professional, especially doctors. He said there was a strict restriction on the advertising of medicine and related profession.

Since the regulation was set up for a long period of time, Wu said it cannot cover the new methods of public relation management and new media, and there were many grey areas under the existing regulation. To make the job of advertising more easy and clear, he said a renewal is needed.

“We are not telling our clients to make use of the grey areas,” said Wu, “We spent a lot of time to apply the rule in order to suit the new media situation in a lawful way.”

Wu helped the doctors to gain more exposure by attending conferences, seminars and talks. He said they probably owned the most detailed private doctors’ database in Hong Kong due to their jobs nature, and Google took their database for research usage.

Wu said they used to do more media planning and management works. After the launch of the high income focused magazine, he said the company was converted into a production company. He said a medicinal TV program was under progress.
