“Advertising should be attractive because it has to raise the attention of the public,” Angela Ng, Executive Director of The Association of Accredited Advertising Agencies of Hong Kong (the HK4As), said at Hong Kong Shue Yan University. She thought advertising is not only entertaining but also delivering messages to the public.

“The agencies in The Association of Accredited Advertising Agencies of Hong Kong provide many opportunities for the people who want to enter the advertising industry, “Ng said.

The HK4As, which was established in 1957, deals with issues concerning the future of the advertising industry and the business of member agencies. There are currently around 28 members which are major advertising agencies sharing common objectives.

Advertising connects different people, like the audience and the clients. In order to produce better advertisement, The HK4As enforces an advertising standards code and helps their members to double check their advertisement. Also, The HK4As acts as a means of arbitration between agencies and providing a forum for the exchange of views between advertising agencies and other engaged in the industry.

“The members of the HK4As are well-developed agencies which provide great opportunities and career path,” Ng said. The scale of these agencies are quite large and have a number of loyal clients so the operation would be more stable.

“However, it is not an easy job to work in the HK4As agencies,” Ng said. More complex corporate structure follows more bindings. Other agencies with smaller scale could have more freedom for adman to try and give new ideas. Besides, more and more people would like to start up a new agency in order to express their ideas and creativity without other bindings.

“If you really want to enter the advertising industry, you should think twice and make sure you can afford the high work intensity,” said Ng. In real life, the advertising industry is not as easy as is shown on the TV. Don’t be afraid of hard work, Ng said.
