Albert Cheng: Online radio has a better prospect than digital audio broadcast radio

By ASHLEY HAU, Siu-ki

Albert Cheng King-hon, founder of Digital Broadcasting Corporation Hong Kong Limited (DBC) , said in the past, he was reluctant to develop online radio, but now he thought there was good prospect.

Last October, DBC was forced to stop broadcasting after a shareholders’ row involving allegations of political interference. The dispute was settled after Cheng sold his stake to the biggest shareholder, Bill Wong Cho-bau. Cheng therefore established an online radio station, D100, at the end of last year with many former DBC staff.

"Somebody said if there is internet, then will be no radio, but it's totally wrong. I even think internet is helping online radio development," said Cheng, at a general assembly in Hong Kong Shue Yan University this afternoon.

Cheng said internet was a big distribution platform and it had unlimited future. He thought the most important element for doing business is developing the distribution channel. So, online radio can seize the advantage to distribute the radio in everywhere. He even said D100 had many fans in Vancouver and Toronto.

Cheng also said developing online radio is cheaper than digital audio broadcast radio. Online radio can save the expenditure in applying the license, installing the aerials, the fee of copyrights. It totally saved around ten million a year.

Cheng also stated that online radio is the fastest way to distribute information or breaking news than other media.

To expand the number of listeners, especially for the elderym his team is trying to use telephone line to link D100. He said nearly twenty thousand of people listen to D100 via phone yesterday.

Cheng estimated there will be around two hundred thousands of listeners in the coming future.
