An author shared his life in journalism at Shue Yan
The author of the book “Hong Kong on air”, Muhammad Cohen, shared his experience of working as a journalist at Shue Yan University last Saturday.
He told the students how his career started, saying that he worked for both his high school and college newspapers when he was a student, and that was the way he explored and developed his interest in this field.
After working for several newspaper offices, he worked for CNN for their 24-hour news. “In 1991, there was Gulf War in Persian, and CNN knew that people in America needed 24-hour news. So, I started to work for them, and this revolution made CNN from footnote to the top of America.” He said.
He also talked about the differences between working as an author and a reporter. “When you work as a writer, you only work by yourself. However, when you are a reporter, you have to work and cooperate with others.” He said. “That is team work!” He added.
When asked about self-censorship, he answered, “You are not telling the whole story when you self-censor. On the contrary, you are just choosing which part of the story is right to tell.”
