Andy Ngai pointed out that the paid journalism is common in the Mainland which reflects the culture of journalism in the Mainland is different than in Hong Kong.

Ngai, the deputy chief editor of Supplement at Hong Kong Economic Journal, who was the editor and consultant of many mainland magazine, said the the companies would pay for the journalists in order to make sure there were news coverage about the organizations.

Ngai said that the payment can be in the form of ‘red packets’ or even vouchers nowadays. Ngai added since the culture of giving ‘red packets’ is the tradition in Mainland, he said it is difficult to change.

Besides the culture of paid journalism, Ngai pointed out that having a good relationship with the related officials is a must in the Mainland. Ngai said, in order to make the publish processes more smooth, the directors of the publishers have to ‘bribe’ the officials by buying gifts and other social intercourse as to build a trusting relationship.

Ngai said “I feel upset about these types of culture and I do not have enough power to change that.” Ngai pointed out that, though he do not agree with that type of culture in the Mainland, he had to follow as to smoothen the processes of publication.--115047 2014年2月25日 (二) 17:56 (UTC)
