Anson Chan has criticized the SAR government today, that the recent decision on suspending the consultation for future political reforms is an alarming sign of intentional delay of timetable for universal suffrage .

The former Chief Secretary also warned her audience in the general assembly of Journalism Department, Shue Yan University, that they should not take the freedom they enjoy today as granted. If they do not speak up for themselves, such freedom may vanish at some point without notice.

Chan analyzed the current situation of the governance of Hong Kong. She said that the turmoil after the appointment of under-secretary and political aids reflected the lack of check and balance of government's power. She also stated another alarming problem, that there is no trust between political appointees and civil servants in the government.

The ex-legislator said the unfair election methods of functional constituencies today should also be blamed for the governance problems at the moment. She explained that some citizens might have more than one vote in the same election, which is a violation to the definition of universal suffrage in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Functional constituencies should be abolished, she said.

Chan has expressed her worries about the future of "One country, two systems". She found Mainland China is making progress on freedom of citizens and democracy. But at the same time, Hong Kong stayed where it were, even leaning backwards. She believed that freedom of press and free flow of information are advantages for Hong Kong, being a regional economic centre and logistic hub. So she encouraged her audience to protect such freedom and rights.

Anson Chan also encouraged the future journalists and young people to take part in politics, by expressing their views in the media. She said that in fact everyone is making some sort of political decisions in daily life, so nobody should say that they do not like politics.
