Former member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong for Hong Kong Island Anson Chan Fang On Sang attended the assembly held by the Journalism and Communication Department of Shue Yan University. Having devoted her life in the Hong Kong civil society for more than 39 years, Anson Chan stressed the need to have the Government checked and balanced.

‘Power needs checks and balances, especially the Government.’said Anson Chan. ‘It's important whether we can elect the person we want, at least if he or she is not up to their jobs, we can simply vote them out and substitute them for better ones.’she added.

Anson Chan also commented on the pace to forward universal suffrage. ‘The pace to put universal suffrage forward is extremely slow since reunification.’she said.

To understand more about the Constitution of Hong Kong, Anson Chan recommended students to read the Basic Law.

She also urged students to participate actively in politics. ‘The best way for young people to participate in politics is to express their views, provided that their views are laid on facts.’she said. ‘As long as you develop your view and speak up, the Government will know her people's needs and constitute related policies that cater the society's needs.’she added.

‘Being the eyes and ears of the community, journalists have to be true in their profession and report news in a fair and objective way.’she suggested what the press should be.
