Approved new TV licenses being hold up

By Tam Yat Pang

Dec. 11 Chairperson of the Communications Authority Broadcast Codes of Practice Committee, Raymond Roy Wong said new free-to-air TV licenses have been approved by Communications Authority, however still being hold up by Chief Executive and LegCo.

Wong said it has been more than a year and half since the Broadcast Authority approved the issuance of new TV licenses, and as being a member of the new Communications Authority, he said the authority has also approved the licenses in April this year.

“Actually the authority has endorsed the approval to the government twice, however, we are not the one to give out licenses. The final decision has to be made by the chief executive and the LegCo assembly,” said Wong.

Regarding the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, So Kam Leung said the issuance of new TV licenses were in progress, Wong said the Communications Authority has done all the procedures, he “totally cannot understand” So Kam Leung’s speech.

However, Wong did not agree that government received “political pressure” form China government on the issuance of TV licenses issue. He added, the word “political pressure” has been overused and he said that “pressure from China” never existed on this issue. “Do you really think the Chinese government was so free to handle all these stuffs?” said Wong.

Wong added, he understand the worries of the two existing TV stations but he did not agreed with their arguments towards banning the issuance of new TV licenses. He added, government has never “promised the TV station will make profit”, and therefore he said, affecting profit was not a good argument for the two existing TV stations.
