HONG KONG, APR. 3- In this technological era, a smart phone can be a good partner for journalists to report news; however, it may be a curse because of the way it is too easy to use, said Stephen Quinn, the Digital Development Editor of South China Morning Post, during his speech in Hong Kong Shue Yan University today’s afternoon. Quinn advised journalists to use smart phones, because it can help journalists to report news in a faster, cheaper and more convenient way.

As Quinn said, smart phone is about 100,000 times smaller which can easily fit inside journalists’ pockets, but it is include a camera, a video recorder and a transmitter. In the past, TV station needs to send at least three people to do a video report. Nowadays, it just takes one person.

Some software can help journalists to do their reporters faster. By using the software, the news production time can be shortened into 14 minutes, which is a lot faster than the common practice– 25 minutes.

However, Quinn said it may be a curse in the way it is too easy to use, even use it to do illegal things. Technology now makes us easier to get access to information and people will no longer have any privacy.

Quinn pointed out that it will be very difficult to distinguish whether people are videotaping when they are using certain smart phones applications. “For example, other would think the person was reading or using the computer but in fact he is taking pictures secretly,” he said.
