Oct. 30 –The deputy chief editor of Hong Kong China News Agency (CNA), Candy Lo , said that China's problems should be treated with leniency, contending that the country needs more time and space to develop press freedom.

“Compared with developed countries in the West, China's national conditions are not the same, but we can see that China keeps opening up and making progress,” Lo said at Shue Yan University on Tuesday.

Government-funded CNA is known as a left-wing news agency. However, Lo said that it is objective in its news reporting. As an example, she cites CNA coverage Liu Xiaobo when he won the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize. With reforms in China, more politically sensitive issues will be widely reported, she said, which may narrow the gap in journalistic standard between CNA and foreign news agencies.

She said that the demonstrations in Hong Kong are meaningful. There are increasing discussions on controversial issues like National Education. But, Lo contents that citizens cannot just follow the mainstream, they need to develop their own attitude towards that issue.
