The new TV broadcasting license will be soon released in this year. However, the prospect of Hong Kong TV industry may not improve but decline instead. Ng Yu, an experienced media worker, said local artists are now turning their focus to the mainland market.


Ng pointed out that large amount of audience is a key factor, “take “Spring Festival Gala Evening“(a Chinese New Year TV programme ) as an example, around 7000 million [7 billion people would be 90% of the global population] audience will watch this programme. You can imagine how large the revenue is.”


“They (mainland TV stations) are willing to offer a higher salary than that in Hong Kong,” said Wong Hei, a former male artist of TVB. He also admitted that Hong Kong artists are eager to take part in some big events in China due to the high circulation and exposure. ” you can see some famous artists perform actively that we have never seen in local TV before,” Wong continued, ”This is because they know that their action will be watch by millions of Chinese audience, or even more.”


To change this dilemma of Hong Kong TV industry, Ng Yu said the only way is to invest more resource and train up more creative TV workers, “we need competition among different local TV stations in order to stimulate the creativity. And we also need to invest more so as to maintain a high quality TV production,” Ng said firmly.
