Sharing big data with the public is how people's living standards can be improved, says a business intelligence sales consultant at a software company.

Tableau Software sales consultant Bobby Wu shared his views at a Hong Kong Shue Yan University talk,“Combing Data Analysis and Visual Perception”, on October 24.

“Big data can help humans upgrade their living standards,”said Wu, who believes the application of big data can lead to the development of a smart city and more convenient lifestyles for citizens.

He gave an example of a car park finder app developed in Hong Kong, which shows users the location of a vacant bay in a car park, making it easier for drivers and helping them save time.

Wu also believed Hong Kong should do more in applying big data to everyday use.

“How to share big data already amassed was no longer the trend," he said, adding that the next step was using that information to predict outcomes that will help people make decisions.

Tableau produces interactive data visualization products focused on business intelligence that can be shared with a click.

Wu, who has a degree in computer engineering, has worked for multiple global software providers in Canada and Hong Kong before joining Tableau in January 2015.
