Hong Kong was once famous for its TV shows, but in latest years they are falling behind with those in Taiwan and Mainland, senior media professionals and artists talked about this phenomenon in a university assembly today. ((run-on))

Being asked about the reason why Hong Kong’s TV shows are declining, Ng Yu, senior media professional, put the finger on ATV. “Many think that TVB is the one to be blamed, but I reckon TVB has done nothing wrong. TVB monopolies the market because ATV hasn’t tried to fight back. Under this situation, thus, TVB has no need to improve its programs’ quality,” he said.

Wong He, Hong Kong famous artist, also thinks that Hong Kong’s TV shows are not as attractive as those in Mainland, from an artist’s aspect. He said, “the market of Mainland China is much larger than that of Hong Kong, and we get much more paid there. And most importantly, they put more effort in the show, for example, artists are required to have a whole day compulsory rehearsal before recording, but in Hong Kong, there may be only 30 mins before the show used to rehearse.”

Another senior media professional, Ho Lai Chuen, agreed that Mainland’s TV shows are taken more serious than Hong Kong’s. “10 years ago, producers of Mainland’s TV shows needed to learn from Hong Kong’s TV shows, but it is now inverted completely.”
