HONG KONG, FEB 26 – Bloomberg Businessweek magazine decided to launch its traditional Chinese-language version in Hong Kong in June, aiming to bring local readers a global vision and be the leader of business magazine in Hong Kong.

Thomas Shao, chairman of Modern Media Group, said that the extension of business was mainly driven by the fact that Hong Kong is a paradise of democracy and it has the biggest advantage of publishing freedom without any government intervention.

“Compared to the mainland, the business market of Hong Kong is small and the return is inferior. However, we do business for social interest but not for profit,” said Shao.

With gossip magazines retain as the best seller in Hong Kong for years, Shao stated that the publishing standards in Hong Kong have not made any progress throughout the past two decades. He expressed his sadness on the situation and he believed that “a revolution” is needed.

“Bloomberg has the vision to become the voice of the world by publishing articles with high quality. The magazine aims at shepherding ideological changes to Hong Kong people and to promote economic, culture and social vitality to the readers,” said Shao.

Shao emphasized that media is a public business. He said that the expansion of Bloomberg helps to tighten the bonding between the Mainland, Taiwan and Hong Kong, thus bring the readers a global vision.
