The chairman of Modern Media Group said the company will cooperate with Bloomberg to launch a traditional Chinese version of the Bloomberg Businessweek in Hong Kong this June.

Thomas Shao, the chairman of Modern Media Group, said at a talk at Shue Yan University today that the Hong Kong version would be different from the mainland one since the former would use simplified Chinese and the latter was using traditional Chinese.

“International news will account for around 50% in content while Hong Kong and Chinese issues will occupy 25% each,” said Shao.

Shao said the new version was aimed at introducing global vision to the Hong Kong magazine market which has stalled for the last 20 years. He added that magazines in Hong Kong lacked international perspectives and the existing financial magazines put too much focus on stock market analysis. “The best selling magazines in Hong Kong were all gossip ones. Chinese people should reflect on this,” said Shao.

Bloomberg is an international news group owned by Michael Bloomberg, the mayor of New York City. Apart from issuing publications including the original English version of the Bloomberg Businessweek, the group also runs a news agency and a television channel.
