A famous columnist says that journalist should browse among books in order to enhance reporter’s credibility.
Last Tuesday, Mr. Chi-Ming Pang, a famous columnist, told the students a lot of literary allusions of some Chinese scripts in Hong Kong Shue Yan University in order to encourage them to obtain all branches of knowledge. He explained, language, whenever written or spoken, is for communication. Therefore, languages in newspapers should be specially easy to read in order to arouse sympathy of the target audience. He further elaborated, the aim of newspapers is to communicate with the audience and to fulfill their needs, and so, the choice of words in newspapers should be specially direct and accurate.
In order to achieve this, apart from browsing among books, Mr. Chi-Ming Pang also encourages students to do more research and pursue knowledge in different fields in order to improve the choice of words and hence to enhance the reporting’s trustworthiness. Therefore, it is important to know literary allusions of Chinese scripts so that we can have better use of words.
And, as language is altering and altering gradually, reporters also have to alter the choice of wordings in order to maintain the function of transmitting messages of the newspapers.
