The only way for Teledifusão de Macau S.A. to stay in the media industry is to make its news reporting more informative and include more international news, said the chief executive, Joao Leong Kam Chung, adding that TDM is catching up with the Hong Kong’s broadcasting media.

Making Progress

TDM has started to reform of its news reporting in recent years, assigning journalists to do news report abroad so they could broaden their audience's mind as well as freshen up the style of news reporting. For example, the news about the country outlook of Russia could help Macau citizens become familiar with a country they rarely hear about. Leung claimed that TDM will improve step by step and build up their own reporting style.

Under the new reforms, the difference of audience rating between Television Broadcasts Limited in Hong Kong and Teledifusão de Macau S.A. narrowed to 14%.

“We all breathed a sigh of relief. It is our honor since more citizens move to watch TDM news rather than watching TVB’s. Therefore, we should praise the journalists and the people who dedicate a lot to the reformation,” said Leong.

Hope still there

Leong said, the working atmosphere has enhanced too. Their efforts are embraced by the society, and that motives TDM journalists to work harder. Besides, they realized that the media situation has altered, he said.

He added, if TDM wants to survive in this competitive industry, they can rely on producing local news. Alternatively, producing news about social justice is still important though. Though the TDM is sponsored by government, the government does not interrupt the company’s operation till now, he said.
