CHENG: I WILL KEEP WORKING FOR DEMOCRACY

By Cheung Yik

Joseph Yu-shek Cheng, the spokesperson of Alliance for True Democracy, at a talk in Shue Yan University today, said that the true value of consultation of universal suffrage is the guarantee of public opinions.

Although the government has decided to set up group for constitutional reform consultation, Cheng still disappointed about the delay for starting a timetable for 2017 Chief Executive election. “A genuine consultation should consider whether there will be mechanism to reflect the public opinion and promise to follow them,” said Cheng.

Cheng also said the controversy of free TV license recently can demonstrate the defects of lacking democracy in Hong Kong. “It is a low acceptability government, but you can’t overthrow it.” However, Cheng has fought for democracy for 30 years and he claimed that he won’t give up.
