Go Grandriders, a documentary which has broken the documentary box office record in Taiwan, is seeing equal success in Hong Kong, selling out both of its screenings for the Asian Film Festival, said Ada Li, manager of CNEX Foundation.

Go Grandriders is a local documentary in Taiwan. It is a true story about a group of elders with average age of 81, who rode around the Taiwan Island by 13 days. Its box office record had reached to NTD$11 million dollars, after it was screened for 10 days.

“This film is about fulfillment of dream. Lots of people in Taiwan put the spot light on it,” Li said, yesterday in a university.

Besides, another production of CNEX, My Way, was also presented in Hong Kong Asian Film Festival. Cheuk Cheung, director of the film, said the production of documentary is more passive than commercial film, as it is based on a true story rather than a creation of script.

The message of My Way is to present the difficulties that the actor of Chinese opera who acts Huadan, a kind of female character, would face. “I want to know more about Hong Kong, and Chinese opera is one of its traditional cultures,” Cheuk said.

In fact, besides film publication and distribution, CNEX has organized an annual thematic production. A theme will be chosen and announced annually, to invite filmmakers to present their ideas towards the theme and to provide funding for them to shoot.

Li thought that the function of documentary was not only acted as visual records that allow others to understand the change of a particular society or country, but also to show the reality to audiences. “We hope audience can have reflections after finished watching the film,” she said.

Also, Li hoped that there would be more proposals from Hong Kong filmmakers presented at the annual thematic production, and publish to the film markets in other regions.
