CTI recruitment is harmless to TVB

TVB has lost many backstage producers recently because of the establishment and recruitment of CTI. Some said that it is a great strike on TVB. However, senior media creative director, Lai Man Cheuk, does not agree with that, “In fact, only 5% of staff left, I think it is just a normal loss and it doesn’t affect the production work of such a big company like TVB at all,” said Lai when attending a seminar held at the Hong Kong Shue Yan University this afternoon.

Lai was a former producer of TVB entertainment programs. His famous programs are classic TVB variety shows, EYT.

When talking about the loss of a number of script writers of his former company, Lai said the loss was just a small matter to the backstage team, “I think it is just a normal loss. Every year there must be a loss of staff. But this time it got more attention among the public because Wong Wai Kee has joined this competition,” he said. Lai said Wong Wai Kee valued each staff emotionally and gave them the salaries that they are worth.

Some people said the new generations are less creative. They claimed that this is the main cause of the decreases of the quality of scripts. Lai does not agree with this.“People are always in the course of evolution. The society is always progressing. I believe that young people can produce good shows,” he said.

He explained that it is the environment, not the people, that caused the low quality shows, “The productions are driven by the market. The environment has changed. Producers now only produce what the audiences want to watch. Both parties are gaining what they need. The producers only want to have a high rating,” he said. [If the shows are getting higher ratings... how are they lower quality?]

In order to have a high rating, bad ideas are created such as pretending to be humor or using disgusting appearance to make the audiences laugh. Lai does not accept this kind of “humor”, “It makes me feel disgusting to have such lousy ideas,” he said.

Yet, as a TV station, it has to continue using these ways to produce products. Lai said the reason behind is that TV production is closely related to the Hong Kong culture, “TV production is about making profits. The way to make profits is to tailor what audiences think is interesting and funny. Producers are actually forced to follow the trend,” he added.

[What is "high quality" prgrammuing? How is it determined? If not through ratings... then what?]
