Media can alter teenagers’ mind, said Candy Lo, deputy chief editor from Hong Kong China News Agency, using the recent anti-national education protests as an example. She wondered whether all the protestors knew the issues or were simply follow the “mainstream”.

Lo said it is important for journalists to be fair and neutral. She disagrees with many newspapers that sensationalize to attract customers. “Some of them may take the angle which follows the loudest argument in the society. But, I think you need to have the whole understanding before making the judgment,” she said.

“Hong Kong China News Agency has changed after the handover of Hong Kong,” Lo added. They start reporting the assembly of June 4th five years ago. Lo described this move as an improvement. Although they are taking a different angle as Hong Kong local media, they have covered the story of Liu-Xiaobo.

She reminded the coming students even though Hong Kong has a good quality of life, the vision of the world is still too narrow. She encouraged to visit more and see more with their own eyes, or else they cannot write a good article.
