A local writer doubted that Cantonese cannot be written on the articles as it was a dialect.

A Hong Kong author and poet Dai Tien disagreed to this statement. He responded to the recent controversy stirred up by Ng Wing-tung, a candidate of Hong Kong Arts Development Council committee election, who said Cantonese cannot be used as a written language. ‘Modern Chinese writer Lu Xun also used dialect in his books. Why we can't use Cantonese?” said Dai.

He also claimed that Cantonese had various tones and pronunciations. Using it as a written language could expand the capacity and elasticity of Chinese language.
