The Education Bureau commented that Cantonese is only a dialect

but not an official language in Hong Kong. Jing Wong, Hong Kong

Famous Director said today in Shue Yan University that this

statement is ‘bullshit’.

Jing Wong said the Hong Kong Education Bureau was trying to flatter

the Chinese government. He believed that the Chinese government would

not agree this statement as well. However, Jing Wong said it is our

civil duty and obligation to understand Mandarin.

He said, ‘a movie director can either choose to make Cantonese movie

or Mandarin movie, it is all about their choice, but if you want to

have more audiences in order to earn more revenue, you would definitely

make a movie in Mandarin.’ He believed that Mandarin movie can get a

commercial achievement easier comparing to Cantonese movie. Many talented

directors and actors are moving to China. Some students concerned if this

phenomenon would lead to the decline of Hong Kong movie industry. Jing

Wong replied that there must have some people left for Hong Kong, he said

some of the directors are still working for the Hong Kong movie industry.

With better revenue and development background, Jing Wong went to China

for several years. In response of enquiry, Jing Wong said he is planning

to cooperate with Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) to make a course for

future directors and scriptwriters. He said he welcomes future editors and

scriptwriters to join the movie industry.
