HONG KONG, Dec. 20 –“How did Hong Kong become such a selfish city?” Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-kiun was invited to the general assembly of Journalism and Communication Department at Hong Kong Shue Yan University this afternoon. He was disappointed that Hong Kong people are getting more selfish.

“When Hong Kong returned to China in 1997, Hong Kong (is-check tense) falling back in terms of moral,” said Cardinal Zen. He expected Hong Kong people would get more united after the handover in 1997 but the fact is they are regressing. He used the case of Mainland-born child with parents in Hong Kong deserve the right of live in Hong Kong as an example.

“It is ridiculous to deny the right for Mainland children to live with their parents in Hong Kong,” said Cardinal Zen. He said that when there was a rumour said that 1,670,000 people would rush to Hong Kong if they have the right to live in Hong Kong, Hong Kong people started to worry about their interests. And Hong Kong people did many things (to avoid the children come-check grammar) to Hong Kong. “It was brutal and selfish!” said Cardinal Zen.

Cardinal Zen thinks that the quality of Hong Kong people is declining while the GDP is increasing. They put their personal interests as the first priority which is (totally-informal) wrong and unacceptable.

Someone criticized that the church should not participate or interfere politics but Cardinal Zen stressed that church should lead Hong Kong people to care about social issues. “I know that religion should be separated from politics, but I am here to protect human rights, not to play politics,” said Cardinal Zen.

The piece makes good points, the example about the mainland born children could use more explanation, how were people brutal? The more details, the stronger the point. Good effort, keep up the good work.
