HONG KONG – 27 MARCH - The media voiced concerns about the expected decline of freedom of speech in Hong Kong due to Chief executive-elect Leung Chun-ying's policies, whose five-year term begins this year. David Schlesinger, the chairman of Thomson Reuters China, said at a university assembly that it is dangerous for journalist to predict the future.

“Instead of blindly anticipating the future, journalists should observe the events unfolding in Hong Kong and only report what they see,” David Schlesinger said.

He believed that there is room for reporters to investigate the real situation in Hong Kong. It is meaningless to predict the coming development of Article 23 or the possibility of having a universal suffrage in Hong Kong in 2017.

Moreover, as the chairman of Thomson Reuters China, he said although one of their website blogs was blocked and could not be viewed in China, they would not avoid reporting sensitive issues about China.“Sometimes, people get upset because of your reporting, but it’s okay as you are simply telling the truth about your stories,” he added.
