The chairman of the Council for Sustainable Development said that the government hoped to cut Hong Kong' rubbish and waste, and now the government are consulting the public of the collection fee strategies and measures. He said that he put a lot of effort on the rubbish report.

Educating public for classification is most important

Bernard Chan said that the aim of collection fee consultation was to educate the public to classify different kinds of wastes, but not to receive the fee from the public. When the public used to classify wastes, the volume of rubbish would be decreased.

Benefit for the recycle industry for encouragement

As the economy grew, the city of Hong Kong's solid wastes and the volume has been tipped to rise by 52 per cent. The government wanted to solve the problem of excessive wastes, recycle is an important element. "When all the recycled things have value and market, the problem would be solved easily", said Chan. Chan believed that it was a possible way to give subsidy to the recycle industry in order to encourage people to classify wastes.

Food waste at source campaign will be introduced by 2016

Chan said the campaign of food waste at source aimed to reduce wastes and educate the public of classification. "I believe that the campaign will affect most of the Hong Kong people because all the citizens need to involve in the campaign", Chan said. The campaign would change the habits of households, and establish a new way to handle the wastes. The campaign will be introduced municipal solid waste charges by 2016.
