【22nd October, 2013 Leung Nga Wing】The spokesperson of the Alliance for True Democracy Cheng Yu-shek denied that he lacked of political sense in meeting with politicians in Taiwan, he said the meetings were merely ordinary discussion towards political issues in Hong Kong.

Concerning there were voices doubting Cheng’s purpose in visiting Taiwan, Cheng said the meeting was merely ordinary people sharing opinions towards political issues in Hong Kong. “I always travel to Taiwan and attend meeting with various politicians and university students. I do not understand why this trip is regarded as problematic.”

Cheng also denied the doubt of lacking political sense in meeting with politicians in Taiwan. “This is not about political sense, it is about my freedom and dignity. If Beijing government does not like people discussing certain issues with foreigners or pan-democrats, does it mean that I cannot meet with them? If this is the case, then how can we organize campaigns and express our opinions? How can we clarify our ideas and missions to the public?”

Cheng said the aim of meeting with Taiwan politicians was to pressure Beijing government into launching a democratic election in Hong Kong. “We want Beijing government to understand that if Hong Kong cannot enjoy democracy, then China’s policy towards Taiwan would not be applicable.”

Cheng was recently discovered to have travelled to Taiwan and met with various local political parties and social groups, including Shih Ming-te, the campaigner of a massive protest “Million Voices Against Corruption, President Chen Must Go” in 2006.

27 Legislative Council members from 12 pan-democratic parties formed the Alliance for True Democracy in March 2013. The alliance hopes to gather the opinions and efforts of various pan-democrats, and cooperatively strive for democracy and the launch of universal suffrage in Hong Kong.

Cheng Yu-shek is a Chair Professor of Political Science at the City University of Hong Kong. He is also the convenor of the Alliance for True Democracy.
