Joseph Cheng Yu-shek, convenor of the Alliance for True Democracy, who met with Shih Ming-teh, former chairman of the Democratic Progressive Party, during his recent travel to Taiwan, denied Global Times’ accusation that his trip was in collusion with Taiwan's independence movement.

Along with Chu Yiu-ming, founding member of the Occupy Central movement and Lee Cheuk-yan, lawmaker of Labour Party, Cheng said the meeting with Shih was nothing more than exchange of ideas. He believes Chinese government’s policies towards universal suffrage in the 2017 election of Hong Kong Chief Executive, will greatly affect Taiwanese’s confidence towards the rule of Chinese government.

Hong Kong Economic Times reported Cheng’s travel to Taiwan as a personal decision discontented by some of his Alliance members. Cheng angrily rebutted the report as a total mistake, that he went on the trip representing himself instead of the Alliance, and it was a decision approved by all Alliance members during meeting.
