Cheng Ping Wah, chief interview director of Sing Tao Daily News, insists reporters need a wide personal communication network that cover any kinds of people. The only reason is to get the first hand of information from each of them.
Knowledge, acquirement, great daring as well as good personal communication network are the basic requirement of reporters. Cheng shares his interview experiences with Journalism students of Shue Yan University yesterday. But he emphasizes that network is the most important port for reporters. He suggests reports should make use of friends, no matter they are lawyers, police or even beggars or post-mortem examiners. They become very useful when handling related news.
Also, friends of reporters may become the sources of information in some situation. Cheng points out that interview content of emergency news almost not deep enough and time consuming. To solve these problems, reporters’ friends can give a hand in information searching process and the background of the news.
To be a journalist, Cheng encourages students should consider stand at involved parties’ or victims’ positions when doing the interview.
