HONG KONG, MAR. 27- The freedom of speech in the press in China is improving, said David Schlesinger, Chairman of Thomson Reuters China, during his speech in Hong Kong Shue Yan University today’s afternoon.

“Right after 64, there was no freedom of speech at all. Every newspaper was the same. Xin Hua wrote and others followed,”said Schlesinger, but there has been a big difference now. “There are so many local newspaper now which are publishing daring story, because Chinese people want to express themselves more.”

Although there is an improvement of freedom of speech in China, Schlesinger thinks China still have a long way to go. “Fundamentally China is on a journey form a very tightly control society to a society which is slowly opening up more, it is not a smooth journey.” said Schlesinger.(good quote)

Meanwhile, Schlesinger thinks that as a foreign journalist, he need to “be careful” when he working in China. “Before you reported anything, you have to absolutely sure about the fact,” said Schlesinger, in order to prevent being accused of the Chinese government.
