Relaxation of China’s censorship system on Hong Kong films should be considered under the development of Greater Bay Area, a film expert says in a Shue Yan University talk.

The Outline Development Plan for Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area was promulgated was published by the Chinese Central Government yesterday.

“Hong Kong filmmakers and our Chief Executive (Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor) should have the guts to suggest China government setting up a common censorship system for Hong Kong and Mainland China,” said Cheuk Pak-tong, Fund Vetting Committee member of Hong Kong Film Development Council and the founder of Hong Kong Baptist University Academy of Film.

Cheuk said China government should have less restrictions to Hong Kong movies while the Greater Bay Area promotes cooperation between key cities in the area.

However Cheuk said he doubt Carrie Lam’s courage to tell Chinese Vice Premier Han Zheng about the declining development of local film industry.

He added that Hong Kong have no rights to ask China to change their film censorship policies, but filmmakers should suggest China government to make concessions, permitting a less restrictive censorship for Hong Kong films to enter China movie theaters.

Cheuk explained that local film productions have plunged from 300 to around 30 movies annually in the recent decades, “local government should provide aid to the industry when they are now experiencing the downtime,” he criticized.

Besides, asking about whether the China’s first sci-fi blockbuster 'Wandering Earth', which was endorsed by China’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chun-ying, can possibly enhance China’s movie industry development, Cheuk said it kick-started in the right direction.

He said the movie proved China movie production technologies are now mastered to an international level, that do not need to find outsourcing companies in foreign countries.
