Chinese news agencies can be as good as foreign news agencies if China is more confident in itself, said Candy Lo, deputy chief editor of Hong Kong China News Agency (CNA), at a university assembly on Tuesday.

Lo said the main concern is that Chinese news wires are hindered by government censorship. Otherwise, CNA and others can be as hard-hitting as such foreign wires as Reuters. She pointed out the Reuters photo essay of the conflict in Wukan village in China as an example of good journalism.

"In fact we do have the talent in our country, but the crucial point is our country needs to be more confident in itself – and not be afraid that the news will weaken the government,” said Lo.

Lo, however, pointed out that the limits on news coverage have eased in recent years, and the agency has even reported on more sensitive issues.

“We can report on demonstrations in Hong Kong. Five years ago, we even started reporting on the June 4 memorials, which is a breakthrough in the China news industry," said Lo, referring to the Tiananmen anniversary. "I have to say our government has progressed.”

Lo added that although the agency is owned by the Chinese government, it can still cover many sensitive stories, and report with fairness. She used the story of Nobel Peace laureate Liu Xiao Bo as an example, claiming that CNA also reported the news of the award thoroughly – though the news angle was slightly different from the Hong Kong media.

Lo also mentioned that she would like to discuss with her fellow co-workers about adding exclusive commentary reports in the future, in the hope of raising the competitiveness of the agency.
