Chiu Sin-chun: The Budget cannot increase competitiveness

Chiu Sin-chun, the business program co-host of Now TV, said that the 2014-15 Budget cannot increase Hong Kong's competitiveness.

"I can't see anything in the Budget that encourages creativity," Chiu said, on Tuesday at a university assembly. He pointed out that the government intervenes in too much things like over controlled on the economic development. Chiu suggested the government should provide a steady environment to increase the competitiveness per capita. He later use the co-founder of Apple Inc., Steve Jobs, the co-founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates and the co-founders of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg as examples, noted that creativity is the main source of competitiveness of a society.

When being asked about the Budget reduces giveaways, Chiu said that isn't a problem. He pointed out that as listed companies may not distribute dividends even they have net profit, giveaway is not a must. Chiu noted how is the money used is more important.

The 2014-15 Budget was released by the financial secretary, John Tsang Chun-wah on last Wednesday. He decreased the amount of giveaways to twenty billion, which is much less than past three financial years and noted that structural deficit maybe appear after seven years.--115035 2014年3月4日 (二) 18:10 (UTC)
